Private Scenic & Heli Adventures From Glenorchy
Lift off from Glenorchy for a private scenic or heli adventure designed around you – from gentle valley flights to alpine snow landings, waterfalls, coastal gems and wilderness picnics.

These scenic and heli adventures are private, flexible and unhurried. We shape the day around what you would love to see – snow-capped peaks, remote rivers, coastal corners or quiet valleys where you can simply breathe and take it all in.

They are ideal for couples, families, friends and guests of many ages and abilities, including those who prefer a gentle pace or have limited mobility. If you are a little nervous about helicopters, we will talk things through carefully and move at a pace that feels right for you.

Summer & Autumn

  • Follow bright rivers and braided valleys framed by deep greens and golds.
  • Visit waterfalls, swimming holes and lush beech forest clearings for a relaxed picnic or BBQ-style lunch.
  • Fly over premium fly-fishing waters and backcountry lakes, with the option to add a future fishing trip.
  • Look for deer, chamois or tahr moving naturally in their own habitat as we pass overhead.

Winter & Spring

  • Touch down on snowy ridgelines and gentle alpine basins with wide South Island views.
  • Experience crisp air, soft snow underfoot and quiet moments away from the busier ski fields.
  • Enjoy the low light of winter and early spring, perfect for photography and reflection.
  • Combine snow landings with lower-level valleys or lakes for a day that suits your comfort and the conditions.
Ideas to Spark Your Imagination

From Glenorchy we can access a range of alpine locations, from gentle snow basins to higher ridgelines with big, open views. Your guide and pilot will choose options that match the weather, snow conditions and your comfort level on the day.

You might step out of the helicopter into soft winter snow, explore a safe, level area at your own pace and take time for photographs, hot drinks and a simple snack or picnic. For those seeking a little more adventure, we can include short walks or visits to multiple landing spots.

Alpine and snow adventures can be as short as a focused scenic flight with one landing, or part of a longer day that also visits rivers, lakes or coast. Many guests enjoy a mid-length trip of around 3–4 hours including flying, landings and relaxed time on the ground.

If you have particular preferences – such as more time on the snow, a quieter location, or less flying – let us know in your enquiry and we will design the day around you.

Not every adventure needs to be high or snowy. Many of our favourite trips follow rivers deep into the backcountry, landing beside waterfalls, quiet pools or open flats surrounded by native forest and mountains.

Here we can set up a relaxed wilderness BBQ-style lunch or picnic, wander along the riverbed, listen for birdlife and simply enjoy being far from crowds. Depending on the day, we may also see deer, chamois or other animals from a respectful distance as we fly in and out.

For something a little different, we can fly towards remote coastal areas and hidden corners that most visitors never see. Think wild beaches, sculpted cliffs and sweeping views where the mountains meet the sea.

Depending on your interests and the conditions, we may land for beach walks, shell collecting or simply to sit and watch the waves. Some routes can also include fly-overs of premium fishing areas or river mouths, giving you ideas for a future fishing adventure.

Whether you are a keen photographer or simply want beautiful images to remember your trip, we can build the day around light, viewpoints and unhurried time at each landing.

These adventures also work well for proposals, anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions. If mobility is limited, we will focus on easy landings and safe, level terrain so that everyone can relax and enjoy the moment. Talk with us in advance about what you are hoping to create, and we will offer honest suggestions.

Typical durations

Scenic and heli adventures are usually half-day or full-day experiences, with flexibility to adapt to your energy and interests. A shorter option may focus on one main landing, while longer days can include several locations and a more substantial lunch.

Helicopter partners

We work with trusted, experienced helicopter operators who know this region well. Flights are private for your group, not shared with other bookings, keeping the experience personal and unhurried.

Fitness & accessibility

You do not need to be extremely fit to enjoy these adventures. Many landings involve only short, easy walks on gentle terrain, and we can choose locations that suit your mobility. If you use walking poles or other supports, you are welcome to bring them.

If you feel anxious about flying, please let us know. We are happy to talk things through clearly, move at a calm pace and keep flight times as short as practical if that helps you feel more comfortable.

What to wear & bring

  • Comfortable, layered clothing suitable for changing alpine and coastal conditions.
  • A warm jacket, hat and gloves in cooler months, plus sun protection year-round.
  • Sturdy closed footwear; light hiking boots or supportive sneakers are usually ideal.
  • Your camera or phone, spare batteries and any personal medications.

Weather & flexibility

Weather is a key part of any heli adventure. If conditions are unsafe or unsuitable for your planned route, we will discuss alternative options, adjust timings or reschedule where possible.

Before any adventure, our Health & Safety Disclosure form must be completed and signed. You can read more about our approach on the Health & Safety page and download forms in advance if you wish.

Every scenic and heli adventure with Top Of The Lake Guiding is different. Tell us what matters most to you – gentle flying, time on snow, waterfalls and rivers, coastal views, photography, wildlife or simply quiet space in nature.

If it helps to imagine possibilities, you may like to browse the Gallery and Reviews pages before you write. From there we can suggest a few options, talk through safety and comfort, and shape a day that feels right for you and your group.
